Tossa De Mar is a flower of Costa Brava

Tossa de Mar is a town and municipality on the northeast coast of Spain called Costa Brava. Situated just 100 km from the French border, this town is part of the autonomous community of Catalonia.

Tossa de Mar is perhaps less popular than nearby Lloret de Mar, but is definitely worth visiting. The town is fortified; it is surrounded by walls that date from the 12th century. The biggest part of the walls is preserved, but from 5 towers, only three have remained- one collapsed due to aging and the other one was destroyed due to the construction of the lighthouse at the beginning of the 20th century.

The remaining towers are the Entrance Tower, the Homage Tower and the Jonas Tower. The town located within the walls is popularly known as "Vila Vella" (which means “the old town”).

Villa Nuova and Villa Vela- the history of Tossa De Mar

The area of Tossa de Mar has been inhabited since the Neolithic period. Until the end of the 20th century, the origin of this town was unknown. However, the ruins of the Roman city were found under the town, so most likely, the Romans were the founders of Tossa de Mar.

The town was established in the 12th century and that is when the castle was built. Later, it was replaced by a windmill and at the end, replaced by the lighthouse.

Tossa de Mar is a medieval town full of narrow cobbled streets and houses made of stone. Interior of the city itself is composed of a lot of flowers on balconies, labyrinths, Plazas (squares in Spanish) and old historic buildings.

Villa Nuova, which means “the new town”, is the modernistic, regulated area full of restaurants where you can try delicious domestic Catalan cuisine; here you will find plenty of shops, cafes and great nightlife. However, the new part of town does not have many hotels and high-rise buildings because of the law.

Tossa De Mar has a Mediterranean climate

Most tourists come in August and perhaps June or July is the best time to visit Tossa de Mar. September is too windy.

Tossa de Mar has three beaches. The main beach "The Tossa Beach” is located near the city center, across the walls. The beach is about 380 meters long.

In Tossa de Mar, the sea is deep blue colored, the coast is quite rocky (meaning of Costa Brava is a rough or wild coast) and it is very exciting to practice scuba diving here due to natural surroundings.

Tossa de Mar has been a fishing town throughout history. Today, it has not changed very much. Fishermen leave their boats on the smallest beach-El Codolar (located behind the walls) over the winter. Third beach is May Menuda and it is about 200 m wide and located on the other side of the bay.

Nowadays, the economy is based on tourism. Since the mid of the 20th century, Tossa de Mar has become a popular tourist place. Every year, a lot of tourists come here to visit the Costa Brava’s flower.
